WATER POLLUTION... WHAT IS THAT?

Right now, you might think we can see the actual state of the oceans by just looking at our nearest beach or rivers. The truth is that, even by just one glance, we can see that everyday they are more damaged and look less like a great habitat for marine species. How many times have we thought "what are they doing, do they know how polluted that water is?" when we see people swim in the river next to our home, specially if we live in a big city? The reason behind this is that we all know the problem with sea pollution, but we are not totally aware of the causes of this neither the severity of this issue and the damage it can cause, not only to marine animals but to all ecosystem - us, humans, included.

People that are not specialized on the topic have a very general idea of the real causes and consequences of water pollution. Thank to the mass media and the internet, this problem has been talked about more than ever over the last decade, and regular citizens are more aware of the situation. Still, we wanted to know how much do they really know about this, so we asked some questions.

WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?

MOST POLLUTING COUNTRIES

WHY THEM?

This graphic gathers the eleven countries with the heaviest water pollution in the world. It can be quite surprising because ten out of them are underdeveloped or developing countries, except for the USA, which holds the last position. Why is it?

These countries are not only water polluters, but air polluters too. The contamination in these places is incredibly high, for example in China, where people have been using face masks for years due to the air pollution.

We can see how China is by far the most polluting country on the list. This is happening because China is experiencing the greatest economic growth ever, which makes millions of companies interested in the country, causing supply and demand to multiply. Being a country that already lives on exports and with the unstoppable growth of demand, production has grown as never before and consequently this is reflected in one of the highest levels of pollution in the world.

WHY ARE COUNTRIES LIKE

INDONESIA OR THE PHILIPPINES SO HIGH IN THE RANKING?

These are underdeveloped countries and, in order to have a greater economic growth, the governments of these countries soften the environmental rules, making the big companies plant their factories there. The big companies find this totally profitable as the cost of employees and production is greatly reduced. If you add to this the fact that they do not have to worry about not polluting, the companies are going to try to reduce costs as much as possible even though this means a huge footprint for the environment. It is also a fact that most of these countries have a coastline or large rivers through which all the pollution from the factories can be evacuated, making these pollution havens.

CAUSES (1).png

As we can see in this graph, the main causes of marine pollution are citizens and large companies. Each one contributes to the problem in different ways.

In the graph we have represented what are usually the most serious causes or problems related to maritime pollution. Maritime mining, for example, is something that oil companies have been exploiting for years, taking thousands of species and fouling and destroying thousands of marine ecosystems, which is closely related to oil spills and the problems they cause. Sewage and chemical spills from companies have also contributed to further fouling and pollution of rivers and oceans. All this added to the contribution of citizens to the pollution of plastics and to the worsening of the serious problem of climate change is making the planet increasingly uninhabitable for the millions of species that habit the sea, causing our planet to melt away and our environment to decompose faster and faster.

POLLUTION DOES NOT ONLY OCCUR DIRECTLY IN THE OCEANS: RIVERS PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THIS PROBLEM

Spinning with the causes, we can see that pollution of the seas is not always direct, but can also occur through the poisoning of rivers. Here we can see another graph with the most polluted rivers in the world.

The twenty rivers that emit the most pla

It's no coincidence that some of the most polluted rivers in the world are from Asia or from places where the big companies are establishing their factories. They take advantage of the lack of environmental laws in these countries and they use the rivers and streams to dispose of all the chemicals and materials left over from production. This means that the pollution produced by these companies ends up in the sea and of course has its consequences on the environment.

All this pollution has its consequences, both on the sea, on the species that habit it and on ourselves

The degradation we are causing to our seas and oceans will bring us serious problems and even worse consequences of the pollution of the seas and oceans that we are already suffering from. We must react and start acting in accordance with the respect

     that our natural environment deserves.

Fortunately there are people, companies and organizations that care about the cause and give the necessary importance to the issue. Either by publicising or giving visibility to the causes or by actively participating in them. Here are a few cases.

Although many people give enough importance to this problem, serious action by the governments and by institutions that actually have the power to change things is needed. nevertheless, over the last decade this issue has been talked about more than ever, and we also wanted to raise more awareness, if possible, about it, because every action counts. small people and small voices can make a huge impact, and journalism gives us the tool to share this information with others. sharing the truth in order to make the world a better place, even if that is a little bit out of our hands, is one of the most beautiful things about this job.

that is why we used this website to give this problem more attention, because, as the interviewed citizens told us, the media does not talk much about this, and, when they do so, they sometimes do not give responsibility to the ones that have it, or they do not give enough importance to it.

having a safe home is key for our safety, and if we don't take care of that, it will come back to us as a much more serious, and maybe irreversible, problem. we hope that, through all of our efforts, you have learnt something new or seen this problem from another perspective.

your action counts.

it is everyone's issue.
