WATER POLLUTION... WHAT IS THAT?
Right now, you might think we can see the actual state of the oceans by just looking at our nearest beach or rivers. The truth is that, even by just one glance, we can see that everyday they are more damaged and look less like a great habitat for marine species. How many times have we thought "what are they doing, do they know how polluted that water is?" when we see people swim in the river next to our home, specially if we live in a big city? The reason behind this is that we all know the problem with sea pollution, but we are not totally aware of the causes of this neither the severity of this issue and the damage it can cause, not only to marine animals but to all ecosystem - us, humans, included.
People that are not specialized on the topic have a very general idea of the real causes and consequences of water pollution. Thank to the mass media and the internet, this problem has been talked about more than ever over the last decade, and regular citizens are more aware of the situation. Still, we wanted to know how much do they really know about this, so we asked some questions.

MOST POLLUTING COUNTRIES
WHY THEM?
This graphic gathers the eleven countries with the heaviest water pollution in the world. It can be quite surprising because ten out of them are underdeveloped or developing countries, except for the USA, which holds the last position. Why is it?

These countries are not only water polluters, but air polluters too. The contamination in these places is incredibly high, for example in China, where people have been using face masks for years due to the air pollution.
We can see how China is by far the most polluting country on the list. This is happening because China is experiencing the greatest economic growth ever, which makes millions of companies interested in the country, causing supply and demand to multiply. Being a country that already lives on exports and with the unstoppable growth of demand, production has grown as never before and consequently this is reflected in one of the highest levels of pollution in the world.
WHY ARE COUNTRIES LIKE
INDONESIA OR THE PHILIPPINES SO HIGH IN THE RANKING?
These are underdeveloped countries and, in order to have a greater economic growth, the governments of these countries soften the environmental rules, making the big companies plant their factories there. The big companies find this totally profitable as the cost of employees and production is greatly reduced. If you add to this the fact that they do not have to worry about not polluting, the companies are going to try to reduce costs as much as possible even though this means a huge footprint for the environment. It is also a fact that most of these countries have a coastline or large rivers through which all the pollution from the factories can be evacuated, making these pollution havens.
As we can see in this graph, the main causes of marine pollution are citizens and large companies. Each one contributes to the problem in different ways.
In the graph we have represented what are usually the most serious causes or problems related to maritime pollution. Maritime mining, for example, is something that oil companies have been exploiting for years, taking thousands of species and fouling and destroying thousands of marine ecosystems, which is closely related to oil spills and the problems they cause. Sewage and chemical spills from companies have also contributed to further fouling and pollution of rivers and oceans. All this added to the contribution of citizens to the pollution of plastics and to the worsening of the serious problem of climate change is making the planet increasingly uninhabitable for the millions of species that habit the sea, causing our planet to melt away and our environment to decompose faster and faster.
POLLUTION DOES NOT ONLY OCCUR DIRECTLY IN THE OCEANS: RIVERS PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THIS PROBLEM
Spinning with the causes, we can see that pollution of the seas is not always direct, but can also occur through the poisoning of rivers. Here we can see another graph with the most polluted rivers in the world.
It's no coincidence that some of the most polluted rivers in the world are from Asia or from places where the big companies are establishing their factories. They take advantage of the lack of environmental laws in these countries and they use the rivers and streams to dispose of all the chemicals and materials left over from production. This means that the pollution produced by these companies ends up in the sea and of course has its consequences on the environment.
